A devotional belvedere

The Calvario of Nicosia is one of the historic popular-devotion sites in the Nicosian centre. A belvedere over the entire urban centre, it is where three traditions converge:

  • the Lenten Way of the Cross, with stations distributed along the climb;
  • the Our Lady of Fatima votive shrine, a stone statuary marking the summit of the route;
  • the panoramic view over the historic centre, which makes it a beloved photographic belvedere.

The Our Lady of Fatima devotion

The cult of Our Lady of Fatima is rooted in Nicosia from the second half of the 20th century and is celebrated on 13 May. The Calvario shrine is the main gathering point for the faithful; in some editions an ascending procession is organised from the centre up to the Calvario.

The Stations of the Cross

The Stations of the Cross at the Calvario are walked publicly during Lent, particularly on Good Friday of Holy Week. The route is short but emotionally powerful for the local community; it marks one of the moments of collective devotion in the Nicosian calendar.

A devotional circuit

The Calvario is one of the three nodes of Nicosia’s Marian devotional circuit, together with the Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore (Our Lady of Aid) and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Carmel. A visit to all three sites in the same day forms a short but dense spiritual itinerary.

To visit

  • Always accessible: the Calvario is open-air and the belvedere is public.
  • Lent and 13 May: the moments of community celebration.
  • On foot: climb from the historic centre, short walk with elevation gain.
