A church of popular devotion
The Church of San Calogero is one of the minor churches dotting Nicosia’s historic centre. Dedicated to the hermit saint Calogero of Sicily, it expresses a popular devotion widespread across the central- southern side of the island — from Agrigento to Termini Imerese, with focal points in the inland villages.
Saint Calogero, hermit of Sicily
Saint Calogero belongs to the Byzantine-Oriental tradition transplanted to Sicily: anchoritic monks who took refuge on the island during religious persecutions in the East. His devotion is linked to the cult of curative springs and secluded prayer sites. In Nicosia, as in many other Sicilian centres, a church near the historic centre is dedicated to him.
Current status
The building is being studied and documented by the Diocese of Nicosia. Precise historical information on the construction date and on the confraternities linked to the church will be integrated once verified with the diocesan archive.
