Villadoro & Monte Altesina

The hamlet of Villadoro and Monte Altesina open Nicosia's outer face: open landscape, views over the Nebrodi and Etna, transhumance trails and prehistoric archaeology.

Villadoro

Villadoro is a hamlet of Nicosia with a historic identity of its own: a small village among hills and oak woods, lived for centuries to the rhythm of transhumance between high and lowland pastures. The village has preserved an atmosphere that the busier Nicosia centre cannot always offer: silence, short distances, people who know each other.

It is a good base for those seeking a slow holiday with Nicosia as a service hub.

Monte Altesina

Monte Altesina (1,192 m) is an oriented nature reserve closing Nicosia’s territory to the north-east. It is one of the most panoramic peaks in inland Sicily: on clear days you can pick out Mount Etna to the south-east, the Madonie to the west, the Nebrodi to the east and — when the air is truly transparent — the Tyrrhenian Sea to the north.

Archaeology has returned a significant Sicel settlement: ceramics, dwelling structures, evidence of a Nuragic-Sicel centre that was active for centuries before Greek colonisation of the coast.

Things to do

  • Monte Altesina trek (half-day, marked trails): gentle ascent, open landscape, Nebrodian fauna (buzzards, falcons, very rarely the wolf);
  • SS117 e-bike tour (full day) with a panoramic Altesina stop;
  • Slow visit to Villadoro: coffee in the square, conversation with locals, cheese and cured meats from local producers;
  • Birdwatching in spring and autumn (migration windows).

Getting there

Villadoro is 12 km from Nicosia centre, 20 minutes by panoramic road. The Monte Altesina trail leaves from “Acqua Santa” with signage and information boards.

In the absence of regular public transport, we suggest combining a Villadoro/ Altesina visit with an e-bike tour or a 4×4 tour that includes a guide and organised transport.

Seasonality

The visit is at its best April-June (blooming) and September to early November (light, autumn colour). In July-August midday temperatures can exceed 35 °C: prefer early morning or late afternoon.

Winter offers crystal panoramas and snow on the Nebrodi, but the Monte Altesina trail can ice over. Winter outings require proper kit and a local guide.
