The story in two lines

The Albereto family has produced cheese in Nicosia for generations. In the 2000s they introduced buffalo of Campanian origin onto the Nebrodi, deliberately bringing a tradition once limited to Campania and southern Lazio into north-east inland Sicily.

The result is buffalo mozzarella produced all year round with milk from animals pastured on the Nebrodi, worked fresh every morning, distributed to local restaurants and sold directly at the dairy.

The visit

A visit to the Albereto Dairy is an experience, not a tourist tour. It begins in the byre, moves through the milk-processing room, and ends with a tasting. You see the mozzarella being stretched. You understand why each piece costs what it does.

  • Standard visit: process observation + tasting of mozzarella, ricotta, fresh milk, paired with local bread.
  • “Make-your-own-mozzarella” workshop: hands in the curd. You leave with the mozzarella you produced. Designed for children with their parents, also suitable for adults.
  • Included in the Food Day Experience and the 24 Baroni Foodie Weekend.

An honest note

Albereto is a small family operation, not a chain. Visits run by booking because each group needs dedicated time from the cheese-makers — who, meanwhile, are working. The production day starts at dawn, and visiting times respect that rhythm.

To book, use the contact form indicating “Caseificio Albereto” as the experience of interest. Confirmation arrives within 24 working hours.

What to combine

An Albereto day pairs well with a 24 Baroni Brewery visit (15 minutes by car, integrated transport available) or a Tavolo dei Baroni dinner in town. The standard Food Day Experience sequence: morning at the dairy, lunch at an agriturismo, afternoon at the brewery, dinner at a Tavolo dei Baroni table.

For families with children under 10, the “Make-your-own-mozzarella” workshop is our strongest recommendation: two hours of wonder, and something to bring back to school on Monday.
