A page of Sicilian archaeology
Nicosia’s rock dwellings are one of the lesser-known but most precious chapters of Nicosia’s archaeological heritage. Carved into the sedimentary rock under the Castle spur, they are an example of prehistoric troglodyte habitation — a settlement model that uses the rock itself as a load-bearing wall.
What can be seen today
The complex includes several cells carved into the rock, with openings toward the valley and traces of internal workmanship (niches, holes for wooden closures, hearths). The night lighting recently installed by the Municipality lets the complex be appreciated also at dusk — when the rock, lit at a raking angle, regains depth and detail.
The FAI candidacy
The rock dwellings have been nominated to the FAI Luoghi del Cuore as a rare example of preserved troglodyte habitation in inland Sicily. The candidacy has brought attention back to the site and has triggered a study and valorisation path coordinated with the Cultural Heritage Superintendence of Enna.
