An oratory that tells a town
Confraternity oratories are a tool for reading the social and religious life of a Sicilian town. Several survive in Nicosia; the Oratory of the Most Holy Trinity is among the best preserved.

Built in the 16th century by the Confraternity of the Most Holy Trinity — one of the historic lay confraternities of Nicosia — the oratory presents a simple façade with a wrought portal and a dedicatory inscription that has allowed dating to 1574.
The confraternities of Nicosia
Nicosia historically had — and in part still has — several lay confraternities linked to the various trades and neighbourhoods:
- the Confraternity of the Most Holy Trinity (craftsmen);
- the Confraternity of the Most Holy Sacrament (Cathedral);
- the Confraternity of Saint Felix (linked to the Capuchins);
- the Confraternity of Our Lady of Aid (Basilica SMM);
- other minor ones linked to trades and historic neighbourhoods.
For centuries these confraternities played a role of social assistance, suffrage for the dead and organisation of processions. Today they are being slowly rebuilt after a long period of decline, thanks to the commitment of the Diocese and several historic-centre parishes.
The building from outside

The current building, preserved in sober forms, still shows the 15th-16th century rhythm of its façade. The 1574 dedicatory inscription is set above the portal’s architrave.
Visiting
- Regular opening: during Holy Week (the oratory takes part in the circuit of sepulchre visitations on Holy Thursday) and on the feast of the Most Holy Trinity (eight days after Pentecost).
- On request: contact the Parish of the Cathedral or the Municipality’s Tourism Office.
Nearby
The oratory lies in one of the alleys of the historic centre, along the route connecting the Cathedral to Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore. A visit to the oratory pairs well with a historic-centre walking tour (see experience).
