A nativity inside a garden
The Presepe Vivente of Nicosia is set up in the Capuchin friars’ garden, next to the friary. You enter in the evening, walk among the centuries-old trees and pass through the scenes: craftspeople at work, shepherds, merchants, moments of life in ancient Palestine and in rural Nicosia, with singing and lights along the way. At the end of the walk, the stable of the Nativity.
It is not a play to watch standing still: it is a route, and the performers live inside it. In the 2024 edition the trail opened with a projection on the walls of the adjacent former prison and closed with the Christmas melodies of a baritone accompanied on the piano.
Almost forty years of tradition
The friars and the community’s volunteers have organised it since the late 1980s: the December 2024 edition was the thirty-seventh. The theme changes every year (in 2024 it was “Christmas, light of the soul — We have all been children”) but the structure stays the same: the garden, the route, the stable.
Dates and entry
Openings fall between Christmas and Epiphany, on a handful of evenings (in the last documented edition: 25, 26 and 29 December plus 6 January, from 17:00 to 22:00). The 2026 dates have not yet been announced.
In recent editions entry was free but with compulsory booking, managed through the nativity’s official channels; access is from the friary side.
Good to know
- The route is outdoors and Nicosia in winter is genuinely cold: dress accordingly.
- The evenings are few and in demand: it is best to book as soon as the dates are released.
