A word that is already the programme
U carrèvë, in the Gallo-Italic dialect of Nicosia, simply means the cart. The title alone says what the evening of Saturday 5 September revolves around: the cart, the vehicle that for centuries carried grain, firewood and families along the roads of inland Sicily, and which here keeps its name in the local speech.
The way Nicosia speaks
Gallo-Italic is not Sicilian: it is a language of northern Italian origin that settled in Nicosia centuries ago and still lives alongside Italian and Sicilian today. It survives in sayings, in nicknames and in words like this one — which is why the Estate Nicosiana puts it on the poster rather than translating it.
Where and when
The event starts at 7:00 pm along Viale Vittorio Veneto, away from the narrow lanes of the upper town: a wide, open street, suited to something you watch go by.
